My name is Kalei Vasquez. I'm interested in humanity and exploring the question: what does it mean to be human?
Because I think much of our world emerged from within: starting with the simplest human instincts to the most complex traditions, from the most obvious emotions to indescribable experiences, we all share a basis and consciousness that has been with us for millennia. To be human is to be a part of something bigger, to be profoundly connected to every other person who has ever lived—as much as we might forget it sometimes.
In my work, I am passionate about exploring topics that anyone can speak to simply by being human, and I create audio and video stories composed of interviews and scenes from the world around us. Using the many perspectives I gather, I always seek to draw out the unity of the human experience, regardless of the topic or of how different the people I speak to may seem. In a time where we are perhaps simultaneously more (technically) connected and (empathetically) disconnected than ever before, I want to bring to the surface a poignant awareness of all the expressions and products of our condition.
My goal with everything I do is to inspire reflection, self-recognition in others, an appreciation for our shared humanity, and ultimately, a little bit more hope.

At a party a few blocks from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, six students reflect on growing up, the college experience, and what about it will stay with them in the future.

Live music is an old, visceral, and universal human tradition. In fact, the peak moments of a good concert can feel beyond euphoric. What is it about live music that moves us and why do we keep coming back to it?

There's growing up and then there's getting older; a gradual awareness of the weight of experience and time. What does it feel like to get older—that distance between who one was once and who one is now?

We all belong to a country; originally or not, entirely or not, happily or not. How do we develop and maintain a sense of national identity? And what are the roles of history, the people around us, and culture in shaping that?
