My name is Kalei Vasquez. I'm interested in exploring the question: what does it mean to be human?
Starting with the simplest human instincts to the most complex traditions, from the most recurring emotions to indescribable experiences, we all share a foundation and a consciousness that has been with us for thousands of years. Whether we remember it or not, to be human is to be a part of something bigger—to be profoundly connected to all those who live today, all those who have ever lived, and all those who have yet to be born.
In my work, I am passionate about exploring topics that anyone can speak to simply by being human, and I create audio and video stories composed of interviews and scenes from the world around us. With the perspectives I capture, I seek to draw out the unity of the human experience, spanning topics, contexts, and the incredible variety of social differences. In a moment when we are perhaps simultaneously more connected and disconnected than ever before, I want to surface an intense awareness about the deeper commonalities of our human condition, the joys as well as the frustrations, the wisdom as well as the eternal questions.
My goal with this work is to encourage a bit of reflection, reveal the empathy within us all, inspire an appreciation for that which we share, and ultimately, create a little bit more wonder at the world around us.

Four summers after returning post-pandemic, the East Town Association's events continue to offer quality, free programming, enrich the East Town area, and bring Milwaukee's various communities together in the heart of downtown.
At a party a few blocks from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, six students reflect on growing up, the college experience, and what about it will stay with them in the future.

Live music is an old, visceral, and universal human tradition. In fact, the peak moments of a good concert can feel beyond euphoric. What is it about live music that moves us and why do we keep coming back to it?

There's growing up and then there's getting older; a gradual awareness of the weight of experience and time. What does it feel like to get older—that distance between who one was once and who one is now?

We all belong to a country; originally or not, entirely or not, happily or not. How do we develop and maintain a sense of national identity? And what are the roles of history, the people around us, and culture in shaping that?
